Is a Four Day Workweek Feasible?

Some companies report higher productivity, but the hack seems to be reducing meeting time.

The balance between keeping employees and avoiding burnout has always been a management challenge. Some still believe that hours worked equates to productivity. From experience, I know that productivity from more hours only works in the short run and ends with a high cost. High hours often cause burnout, accidents, and destructive conduct. That is expensive.

 

There is evidence that some employers report higher productivity with a four-day workweek. The week the Wall Journal published an article on the success seen in Britain and other countries.    

 

Maybe less work time does create higher productivity. We know from the covid lockdowns that many professionals reported working fewer hours yet were more productive when they didn’t come into the office.

 

When you read the WSJ article, an interesting caveat appears. Managers cut meetings, allowing more time to get the work done.

 

The problem is that new workers often need meetings to establish relationships and adopt the culture. Managers have a balancing act.
