Employers Seeking Skills More Than Degrees

Fewer require a college degree

A couple of weeks ago, we shared an article concerning a job advertising trend in the United States. This week, we share information about another national movement. I attribute some of this trend to the fact that the job market remains tight for employers. Many causes are likely, including the rapid technological changes we are all experiencing. Many employers are seeking a specific skill or looking for the aptitude to develop that skill quickly.

 

The broader knowledge granted by a college degree is not at the same level of demand.  

 

The terms 're-skill' and 'upskill' have been more common in recent years. For some employers, a college degree is a proxy for that flexibility. In reality, aptitudes and attitudes are more likely to identify those most fit to upskill.

 

The odds are that you know entrepreneurs and highly skilledindividuals who chose not to complete a college degree. Think of the graduates you know who are doing jobs unrelated to the degree they got five years ago.
