Job Openings Ease Slightly Earlier this month, we shared a report showing a rapid increase in pay for Generation Z (born after 1995). Much of that increase is due to an employment market favoring the employee. Now we see a report from the Wall Street Journal indicating that the trend may be peaking, as job openings are coming off of record highs. Some caution is still necessary, as there is still an uptick in workers quitting for higher pay.
Don’t be trapped by trying to compete with wages alone. Survey information shows hybrid work arrangements are also valuable in today’s market. Before recruiting, answer the question, “Why would a person want to work here?” The answer shows what you sell to these rare and picky job candidates. Is your offer likely to stand out when the candidate sees the job advertisement?
Younger candidates don’t have the experience and knowledge you need. Many organizations offer training, another attractive benefit for candidates. Before hiring, use an aptitude assessment to ensure candidates are well-fit to learn and perform the job. It is too expensive to train individuals not inclined to do the job well.
