Survey Says Hybrid Work is Necessary to Compete Hiring remains a challenge as ‘The Great Resignation’ continues. A couple of weeks ago, we shared information on ways to fix the holes in the recruitment bucket. One recommendation was hybrid work. Several of our clients saved employees by updating their work-at-home policy. Yesterday, we learned of a client reaching out to terminated employees and asking if hybrid work might have kept them on board. The response has been positive, and now the ex-employees know that their old employer might be an attractive option. One employee has already returned.
Not convinced that hybrid work is a competitive advantage? Check out the results of a new survey covering 10,000 knowledge workers. Hybrid work increased 12% between May and November of last year. 95% of these workers want to set their hours, too. Today, the Wall Street Journal covered the survey. The policies are roses, so the article also covers thorns.
Almost two years ago, we started working with clients who were scrambling to address the pandemic. Experience told us that individuals who are less independent, more social, and less focused would struggle with work-at-home assignments. That has proven true. These are measurable traits, and before you send someone home to work, you should know if they will thrive or disconnect.

The Human Side of Selection
For months we have been sharing articles on how the workforce has dramatically changed since the pandemic started. Much of the change, like working-at-home, was expected. Covid hastened its arrival, and now we struggle to adjust quickly enough to create a retention culture. Keeping talent has become the number one issue, so much so that we all understand the term “The Great Resignation.”
Our publisher, Wiley, surveyed 4,500 working professionals last July. These workers are reporting higher levels of stress than ever before. You probably know professionals who have quit a job, even if they don’t have a new job lined up. We see a rash of career switching. The study and findings to help you increase retention are below. Click the “Keep Your People: How to Navigate the Great Resignation” banner.
The pandemic hastened the acceptance of technologies that allow hybrid work. Hybrid work is attractive to some and isolating for others. Now, we must leverage technology to build culture, increase belonging and enhance the hybrid experience for both types of people.
